Intellectual Property Asset Management Best Practices

The PetrashWilliamson Intellectual Property Asset Management model is a dynamic process that should help guide the Intellectual Property Asset Management Team to effectively manage intellectual properties. The model is not intended to represent absolute "how to's," but to act as a guide for how to think about the management of intellectual assets.

In practice, all of the phases occur simultaneously rather than in a linear mode, but for purposes of looking at a particular asset to assure leverage and grow value, one could start with the "the organization’s Intellectual Asset Portfolio" block. In that area the IA Manager needs to understand the classification of an asset and how it fits with the business strategy. When businesses know what assets are being held and used, additional needed assets can be acquired outside of the organization.

When looking at the model and the importance of the concepts of the different steps, the boxes indicated as "business development matrix strategy fit" and "intellectual asset generation" require some decision-making and considerations. The business has to consider what resources it will commit to develop its strategic intent through the use of intellectual assets. It also needs to have a good understanding of the fit its current assets have in the context of the competitive environment
